a few days ago adam muto posted a tweet with this killer pizza eyes gif in it (which was based on this drawing by pen ward) and i felt completely obligated to redo it myself.

Ieri a Milano è morto un bambino di dodici anni, in bicicletta. Lo ha investito il tram dopo che aveva dovuto evitare un’auto parcheggiata in divieto di sosta. Sono quelle tragedie che uno può avere cento motivi per sentirle familiari. Non solo perché tutte le tragedie di bambini sono familiari. Anche perché hai dei bambini e abitate a duecento metri da dove è successo. Anche perché le auto parcheggiate dove dovrebbero passare le persone, le sedie a rotelle, le biciclette, a Milano sono un’abitudine trattata con indulgenza da decenni. Anche perché lo stato disastrato delle strade milanesi rende il sovrappiù delle rotaie pericolosissimo e impone ai ciclisti acrobazie che è un miracolo non ne muoia uno al giorno.
E uno dice, adesso lo capite che le ciclabili non sono un lusso da fighetti nordeuropei o ambientalisti in cachemire, ma che sono l’unica protezione per gente e bambini che altrimenti vengono ammazzati, o ne riparliamo la prossima volta che capita? O ci limitiamo a fare una striscia gialla per terra e dire “ciclabile!”, lasciando intanto che le auto parcheggino dove vogliono, marciapiedi compresi?
Poi ci si ritrova come Marta Vincenzi, a chiedersi cosa si poteva fare.

This is genuinely Microsoft’s idea of a “streamlined”, “optimized” UI for Windows Explorer. They were so proud of it they wrote a blog post about it.
The post is a sort of masterpiece of crazy rationalization, but I think my favourite part may be this screenshot:
Here, they proudly overlay the UI with data from their research into how often various commands are used. They use this to show that “the commands that make up 84% of what users do in Explorer are now in one tab”. But the more important thing is that the remaining 50% of the bar is taken up by buttons that nobody will ever use, ever, even according to Microsoft’s own research. And yet somehow they remain smack bang in the middle of the interface. The insanity is further enriched by this graph:
Again, this is Microsoft’s own research, cited in the same post: nobody — almost literally 0% of users — uses the menu bar, and only 10% of users use the command bar. Nearly everybody is using the context menu or hotkeys. So the solution, obviously, is to make both the menu bar and the command bar bigger and more prominent. Right?
Microsoft UI has officially entered the realm of self-parody.

Far pagare le tasse alla chiesa non è una questione di fede, non è un espediente per mettere gli uni contro gli altri, chi è credente contro chi non lo è, è una questione di coerenza e giustizia, specialmente in un periodo – quale è questo – di profonda crisi economica, dove tutti devono essere responsabilizzati a dare il buon esempio e fare la loro parte.
